MU Doctoral Seminars

  • Fall 2011 Doctoral Student/Faculty Seminar Brochure

  • The first of three required seminars for the Marshall University Doctoral Program.

  • I remember being very overwhelmed at the first seminar. The big ideas I focused on were the need to find a chair since many professors were already overloaded with doctoral students. I remember making it my mission to find someone that had like interests and content-area knowledge.

  • Fall 2013 Doctoral Student/Faculty Seminar Booklet

  • The third of three required seminars for the Marshall University Doctoral Program.

  • During the third seminar, I ate lunch with Dr. Edna Meisel and her doctoral students. At this lunch, I developed an idea about my theme of interconnectedness and interdependence. I spoke with Dr. Meisel about the theme and she seemed pleased with the idea. The mock portfolio presentation that was based on organ systems sparked my imagination on using a science-based theme. I was really excited I had a prospect of a theme.

  • Fall 2012 Doctoral Student/Faculty Seminar Booklet

  • The second of three required seminars for the Marshall University Doctoral Program.

  • During the second seminar, we received more of the same lectures from various professors about the importance of having a chair and finding committee members. Also, there was a large focus on helping us determine what we needed to compile a portfolio. I remember being surprised that people were still making portfolios in large binders.

  • During the seminar, I attended Dr. Anderson's prospectus session and I gained a sense of direction for the next phase of my doctoral studies. The session offered perspectives from professors and current doctoral students. I finally have a grasp on what my future holds in terms of the dissertation process. This session was very informative and useful.

  • During lunch, I talked with Dr. Edna Meisel about my portfolio and the upcoming portfolio presentation. We also talked about the fact that I am only in the idea phase of the dissertation topic and she reassured me that it was normal to be at that point. I feel confident that I can progress through the portfolio reflection and presentation and proceed to the dissertation phase of the program.
