  • I chose to submit an article for publication to the Journal of Science Education and Technology that I wrote in Dr. Fran Simone's Writing for Publication course. I wrote about the use of science fiction novels and films in science classrooms.

  • One of my main research interests is understanding why students, particularly minorities and females, lose their desire to study science and mathematics at the secondary level. This article focused on using novels and films to create interest in STEM fields as well as improve literacy in science.

  • This is relevant since the Common Core State Standards includes a component to increase literacy across all content areas.

  • Unfortunately, the article was not accepted for publication.

Co-Publishing with Marshall University Faculty

Co-presenting with Marshall University Faculty

  • West Virginia Statewide Technology Conference Summer 2013

  • Co-presented with Dr. Edna Meisel, my chairperson, on the topic of Social Networking in the Secondary Classroom.

  • The presentation originated from work I had previously completed in Dr. Lisa Heaton's CIEC that focused on Twitter and Edmodo use in the secondary science classroom.

  • The process was a good introduction to presenting academically and was followed by a great discussion with superintendents, fellow secondary teachers, and principals concerning safety issues surrounding social media use in the classroom.

  • Tenth Annual Congress of Qualitative Inquiry Spring 2014

  • Co-presented with Dr. Elizabeth Campbell and fellow doctoral students at the Tenth Annual ICQI Conference.

  • We presented as a panel forum on the topic of Encountering the Common Core. This was a unique experience since we read our own stories about our perceptions and experiences with the Common Core State Standards from a qualitative perspective.

  • My specific portion of the presentation was titled Politics and the Common Core: Teaching Science in the West Virginia Coalfields.
